The art behind Filtrare

A piece of art. Made for your everyday.

Every Filtrare coffee maker begins with a simple idea: to create something beautiful, functional and lasting.

Through careful hands and deliberate steps, raw clay becomes a piece you can brew with, pour from and enjoy every day. Here’s how your Filtrare comes to life.

From clay to coffee

The making of a Filtrare.

From liquid clay to a piece of everyday art. A journey through careful hands, quiet pauses and the heat of the kiln.

About a week of making, with time for each stage to unfold.

  1. It All Starts with Clay

    Casting the Form

    Casting the Form

Every Filtrare piece begins with a custom-designed mold, created to capture the balance of proportion and pour that defines its shape.

We pour liquid clay, known as slip, into the mold. As the plaster draws out moisture, a layer of clay forms against its walls. The excess slip is poured away, leaving the familiar silhouette of our coffee maker.

This step demands patience and precision. Timing and the maker’s eye help determine the thickness of the walls before the piece is ready to emerge.

  2. Patience in Every Detail

    Drying and Refining

    Drying and Refining

Once released from its mold, each piece is still delicate, a soft clay form that requires a steady hand.

We let it dry slowly, refining edges and smoothing seams with care. The spout is shaped to pour cleanly, and every surface is checked by touch, not just sight.

This quiet, unhurried stage ensures the final piece feels as good in the hand as it looks on the counter.

  3. Transforming Clay into Ceramic

    The First Firing

    The First Firing

After drying, each coffee maker is bisque-fired at around 1,800°F (982°C).

This first firing hardens the clay, giving it strength while keeping it porous enough to accept glaze.

It’s the moment when raw clay becomes ceramic — a foundational transformation that prepares it for its final expression.

  4. Adding Colour and Character

    Hand-Glazing

    Hand-Glazing

This is where the artistry truly shines.

Each piece is glazed by hand — dipped, brushed, or layered in tones inspired by natural minerals and traditional ceramic palettes.

No two are ever the same. Subtle variations in glaze thickness and firing conditions create unique textures and depth, making every Filtrare coffee maker one-of-a-kind.

  5. The Kiln’s Final Touch

    The Final Firing

    The Final Firing

Once glazed, the pieces return to the kiln for their final firing, reaching temperatures above 2,200°F (1,200°C).

Here, heat and time work their quiet magic. The glaze fuses to the ceramic body, transforming its surface and bringing the colour and character of each glaze to life.

When the kiln cools, the result is a piece that’s both strong and refined — a vessel made to last for your mornings.

  6. Care in Every Detail

    The Finishing Touches

    The Finishing Touches

Each coffee maker is then carefully inspected.

We look closely at the glaze, the finish and the details that make each piece its own. It’s one final moment of care before it leaves the studio.

Only pieces that meet our standards are ready to become part of your everyday.
